Types of Journaling: What's Your Journaling Personality?
If you're looking up how to journal for beginners, you've probably hit the same wall most people do. You buy a nice notebook, sit down, and try to write poetic paragraphs about your day.
By day four, you quit.
Why? Because you are trying to force a habit that doesn't match your current mental state. Somewhere along the way, we absorbed an image of what journaling is "supposed" to look like. When our pages don't match that perfect image, we assume the problem is us.
It rarely is. As I explain in Chapter 4 of my book, Just 10 Minutes with Pen and Paper, journaling is just a tool. And like any tool, it must fit the task—and the state you are in. You don't need a better personality; you just need the right lens.

I break down the concept of the journaling "lens" in this quick 60-second video:
The 3 Types of Journaling Personalities
There are three primary lenses you can view your thoughts through. You don't need to pick one forever—you only need to pick the one that matches how your brain feels today. Which of these sounds like you?
📏 The Architect
Energy: Overloaded, Busy, Pressured.
The Style: You don't write paragraphs. You build structure using lists and bullet points. You turn chaos into data. Your goal isn't to be poetic; it is to extract the essentials and find order so you can stop panicking.
🌊 The Storyteller
Energy: Restless, Anxious, Mentally Noisy.
The Style: Stream of consciousness. You write without interruption, editing, or filtering. You allow the thoughts to spill exactly as they arrive. Your goal is emotional processing and internal relief. You write to drain the brain.
🎨 The Artist
Energy: Wordless, Emotionally Stuck.
The Style: Visual journaling. When words are too slow, you use symbols, stick figures, and arrows to map out your mind. It doesn't need to be beautiful; it just needs to be honest.
